FRIDAY, April 13                        MONTHLY PROGRAM MEETING

7 P.M.
Native Plants, the Birds and Birders Who Use Them with Carol Stoner, Washington Native Plant Society

Urban density and suburban sprawl have changed the plantscape of the Puget Sound region. Our birds and other wildlife benefit when we use native plants in our yards and gardens. Come and learn why both the avid birder and the ardent gardener love native plants.

Field Trips

We sponsor several field trips each month, providing opportunities for birding and natural history education. Field trips are open to members and non-members alike. No advance notice is required to join a field trip unless stated otherwise in the trip description. Trips go rain or shine! Bring a sack lunch, beverage and binoculars. Pets are not permitted on field trips. Trips range from short walks in Snohomish County, to all-day and overnight trips in other parts of Washington and British Columbia, In early spring we usually have a one week long trip to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in south east Oregon. Most of our trips are birding oriented, although we also host hikes and other outdoor activities.
See Field Trips for further information about currently scheduled events.

The Pilchuck Audubon Profile

The Pilchuck Audubon Profile is Pilchuck Audubon Society's newsletter and is published 10 times per year. Monthly except the May/June and July/August issues are combined. The curent issue may be viewed by returning to the "Homepage" and clicking on "PROFILE"

It is an informative publication providing monthly program agendas, an activities calendar, chapter news, SmartGrowth report, volunteer opportunities, accompanied by interesting articles covering a wide range of subjects associated with nature and environmental issues.

Submit articles for the Profile to the newsletter editor at the PAS Office, 1803 Hewitt Ave., #108, Everett, WA 98201 by the 5th of the month preceding publication or by email to: rockyprairie@earthlink.net. Please limit articles to 800 words. Editor reserves the right to edit for reasons of space, grammar, and legality.

If you would like someone to receive an introductory, free copy of the Profile, please email our membership chair, Judy Lowell: judylowell@pilchuckaudubon.org

"Folding parties" to prepare the newsletter for mailing are usually held the third Monday of the month.
Everyone is welcome. Contact Judy Lowell: 425-353-8150, judylowell@pilchuckaudubon.org for information.

Growth Management
Our SmartGrowth Campaign trains and empowers local citizens to work for better growth management. It is an integral force in Snohomish County's growth management dialogue. SmartGrowth, works hard to stem the consequences of irresponsible development, and to ensure that sensitive areas and wildlife habitat maintain a high profile in growth management debates.
See Smart Growth for further information and contact person.

Bird Sightings

Pilchuck Audubon Society has recorded information on bird sightings in Snohomish County for over twenty years. We also publish Birding in Snohomish County, the only comprehensive guide to the species and birding sites of Snohomish County.

Education

We offer education opportunities for all ages. We sponsor Audubon Adventures in schools, a system of professionally developed educational materials for grades 3-6. We offer birding classes for beginning, intermediate, and master birders. We bring the natural world to people of all ages, fostering a conservation ethic throughout our community. Each summer, we host educational booths at festivals and fairs.

Biodiversity Fund

Our Biodiversity Fund provides funding assistance to other organizations for land acquisition and educational projects that protect and sustain native biological diversity.

Forests

Our Forest Program monitors and protects upper watershed ecosystems on national forest land, about forty percent of Snohomish County's land area. We have occasional meetings where we track timber sales, forest roads, and other national forest management activities. We are actively seeking new members so that we can meet more regularly.

Salmon Habitat
Our Salmon Habitat Protection Program educates community members about salmon habitat needs, the listing of chinook salmon as an endangered species, and the need to speak out about salmon. By building an educated community we can cultivate a sense of responsibility for natural systems. Clean water for salmon and clean water for families are intimately connected! Pilchuck Audubon Society represents conservation interests on the Tri-County Executive Committee for Puget Sound Chinook Salmon Recovery.
