Birding: Hiram Chittenden Locks and Botancial Garden

Please join Academia Latina and the Pilchuck Audubon Society for a visit to the Hiram Chittenden Locks and Botanical Garden on Saturday, June 15th, 2024. We will meet at 9:00AM at the Ballard Locks south parking lot. The address is 3300 W Commodore Way, Seattle, WA 98199. Here is the easiest way to get here: from southbound State Route 99/Aurora Avenue turn right on NW 85th St. Turn left on 15th Av. NW. Cross the Ballard Bridge. Turn right at the Emerson overpass. Turn right again at 21st St. 21st bends left turning into Commodore. Caution: parking on the south side is free. In 2022 some guests got temporarily lost by following Google Maps to the north side from whence they entered the gardens and finally found us. We will start off with the fish ladder, because their website says this is supposed to be the best month for Sockeye Salmon migration. We certainly can’t guarantee we will see any fish, but we will look. We will wander across the locks to see how they work and to watch the passing boats. We can visit the historical exhibits and botanical gardens to see whatever birds we can find. There are often plenty of sea birds on the waters and occasionally some seals and sea lions.

Bring sturdy walking shoes, a hat, water, a rain jacket, and a picnic lunch for your party. Also bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. ADA. No dogs.

Class: Gulls of Washington

1-night online course (October 17)

Optional field trip add-on (October 19)

Instructor: David Droppers

Learning your gulls is like getting your flu shot - you don't want to but you know you should. They are daunting, but they are everywhere, and oh so entertaining. David Droppers will share the keys to identifying adult gulls (sorry, he's not so confident on his immatures, maybe a class in several years), and then, for those intrepid souls, venture out the following weekend to put what we've learned into practice. We will likely cruise from marina to marina, looking for wintering and migrating gulls. David will also share a tool he has developed to make identification a bit more methodical, taking much (but not all) of the pain out of the process. Learn your gulls - can't you hear them? They're laughing at you!

The class will be recorded and registrants will have access to the recording until November 7.

Registration:

Online class: $15 for PAS members, $20 for non-PAS members

Field trip: $25 for PAS members, $35 for non-PAS members

4-week online course (November 12, 19, 26, & December 3)

Few observations in nature delight the soul more than the sight of a hawk or an eagle circling lazily in the sky. But looks can be deceptive. These are working birds, actively hunting for prey to chase down and eat. "Raptor" comes from the Latin word for "seize or plunder," and that is indeed what these magnificent hunters do. Washington is host to 20+ species of vultures, eagles, hawks, and falcons! Come let master birder Connie Sidles show you how to identify them all. Class is designed for advanced-beginner and intermediate birders.

Marysville Library Program: Making Your Yard a Bird Haven

Making Your Yard a Bird Haven

Learn how to be a hero to wild birds by landscaping your yard, patio, or community space in a way that offers resources for both migratory and residential birds. Your outdoor space will be just as beautiful, if not more so, than a traditional lawn or yard. In this presentation, you’ll discover what birds need to thrive, how to provide those resources to attract them, and how to keep those birds safe.

Brian Zinke is the Executive Director of the Pilchuck Audubon Society, which represents Snohomish County and Camano Island. His background as a wildlife biologist has taken him across several states where he's worked to conserve endangered species and species of concern. He is passionate about science and conservation, and enjoys hiking, backpacking, photography – and birding – in his free time.

Instructor: Whitney Neufeld-Kaiser

Identifying birds by their songs and calls can transform both your everyday life and your birding experience. This 2-part class is perfect for folks who just finished the recent Beginning Birding class or are just starting to recognize the sounds of birds in their neighborhood. We’ll take a deep dive into the songs and calls of a few birds that are both common in Puget Sound and that have distinctive and diverse sounds. With the goals that (1) you’ll come away having definitively mastered the sounds of at least one bird and (2) you’ll have a solid foundation of skills to learn the sounds of as many birds as you fancy.

The class will be recorded and registrants will have access to the recordings until April 9.

Registration:

Online class: $20 for PAS members, $30 for non-PAS members

Field trip: $15 for PAS members, $25 for non-PAS members

Wild Stories from the History of Bird Migration Research

Guest speaker: Rebecca Heisman

Register to attend (online)

We've all heard amazing facts about bird migration—the long distances that birds travel, the ways that they navigate, etc. But did you ever wonder how we figured all of this out? While working for the American Ornithological Society, Rebecca Heisman became fascinated with the varied and creative techniques that scientists have used to study bird migration, and this eventually became the basis for her book Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration. In her talk, she'll share some surprising stories from the history of bird migration research and discuss why understanding migration is so crucial for bird conservation.

Rebecca Heisman is an award-winning science writer who lives in Walla Walla, Washington, and has worked with organizations including the Audubon Society, the American Bird Conservancy, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the American Ornithological Society. Flight Paths is her first book.
