Birding: Lummi Flats, Lake Terrell & Sandy Point
Meet at 7:45 AM at the Quil Ceda Village Walmart lot west of Marysville (I-5 exit 200). Park away from the store, to the east, near Quil Ceda Blvd. and I-5. Please come prepared to carpool – the number of cars affects safety as well as where we are able to stop for birding, and also we want to be environmentally conscious. Organize into carpools, head north on I-5, take the exit for Bow Hill Rest Area (milepost 238) and meet the leader there at 8:30 AM. We will search Lummi Flats for raptors, owls, ducks and shorebirds, Lake Terrell for ducks and swans, and Sandy Point for seabirds and shorebirds. Each car needs a Discover Pass.

Class: Under the Skin with Bird Bones and Skeletons
1-week class conducted over Zoom
March 4
7:00-8:00pm
Instructor: David Lukas
Birds are exquisitely designed creatures of the air, but have you ever thought about how the underlying structure of a bird's bones and skeletons help birds move and fly? Flight is not just a matter of flapping your wings harder, it actually requires many special adaptations and compromises that impact all aspects of a bird's life.
In this fascinating presentation we will learn about some of the adaptations we can observe when we look at a bird's skull, beak, eyes, wings, legs, and feet. Many of these features are hidden by feathers, yet they uniquely shape every aspect of what we see when we watch birds. Expect to come away with a new understanding and appreciation for the hidden mechanics of how birds eat, sleep, and move, along with an understanding of how feathers interact with a bird's skeletal structure.
David Lukas is a well-known naturalist and author based in the Methow Valley. He has written seven books and contributed chapters to another forty books on a tremendous range of nature topics. He has also led thousands of natural history tours, classes, workshops, and presentations. David's most recent project is producing a weekly nature newsletter at www.lukasguides.com
Class participants will have access to the Zoom recording for 3 weeks after the class.

Everett Public Library Presentation: Making Your Space a Bird Haven
Presented by Brian Zinke, Executive Director of PAS
Since 1970, we have lost 30% of our birds in North America. A large driver of that is habitat loss and degradation. But here’s where you can be a hero in this story. You can landscape your yard, patio, or community space in a way that will provide crucial resources for both migratory and residential birds. And it will be just as beautiful, if not more so, than our traditional lawns and landscapes. In this presentation, you’ll learn what birds need to thrive, how to provide those resources so you can attract birds to your space, and how to keep those birds safe once you've enticed them to your space.
Birding: Wallace Swamp Creek Park
Meet at 9:00am at 19851 73rd Ave NE, Kenmore, WA 98028 near the parking kiosk.
This 25 acre park features trails through riparian forest along Swamp Creek that will be muddy or even flooded this month, tall rubber boots highly recommended.
There are no restrooms on site.
Please submit your 2026 Field Trip Liability Release before participating, no other registration is required.

Meet at 7:00 AM at Quil Ceda Village Walmart lot west of Marysville (I-5 exit 200). Park away from store to the east near Quil Ceda Blvd. and I-5. Please come prepared to carpool — the number of cars affects safety as well as where we able to stop for birding, and also we want to be environmentally conscious. We’ll cross the border into Canada to visit the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, where many species -- including raptors, shorebirds and passerines -- are possible. After about three hours of walking and birding the level trails, we’ll eat our lunches there before heading home. Admission per person is $10 Canadian (about $7.40 in US dollars) or $8 Seniors (about $5.86 US) -- you can pay in US dollars or by credit card. Be sure to bring your passport or Enhanced Driver’s License. Learn more about the site at www.reifelbirdsanctuary.com. We will book a group reservation (so do not book an individual reservation). Washington Ornithological Society Presentation: Lights Out for Birds: How Reducing Nighttime Light Saves Migratory Species
Presented by Brian Zinke, Executive Director of PAS
Each year, millions of birds migrate across our region under the cover of darkness. But increasing levels of artificial light at night are disorienting these travelers, drawing them into cities where they face fatal collisions with buildings, windows, and other structures.
Join us for an illuminating presentation on the Lights Out initiative, a growing effort to reduce light pollution during peak migration. In this presentation, we’ll explore why birds are vulnerable to nighttime light, examples of successful Lights Out programs, and practical steps we can take here in western Washington to help our birds navigate the night skies safely.
Birding: Middle Fork Snoqualmie River - Oxbow Lake Loop Trail
Meet at the western end of the Bothell Park n Ride to carpool. There are limited parking spots at the trailhead, so we'll meet at 7:00 AM and carpool from the park n ride. Anyone who is willing to drive should be sure to have a Discover Pass to park at the trailhead.
Expect an approximately 2 mile, level walk in a beautiful mature forest, with great views of the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River, majestic mountains, and a peaceful oxbow lake. Some wintering species may still be around, but we should be finding some early migrants coming through as well.
Boot recommended, some large steps over fallen trees may be necessary.
After you have submitted your 2026 Liability Release form, please contact the trip leader in order to register for the trip.

4-week class conducted over Zoom
April 20, 27, May 4, May 11
7:00-8:30pm
Instructor: Connie Sidles
Long before humans ever thought of building even simple shelters, birds were constructing elaborate nests made of everything from tree bark to sheep's wool. No doubt they inherited the basic skills from their dinosaur ancestors, but in the millennia following the dinosaurs' demise, birds evolved nests that required needlework, weaving, bricklaying, excavating, and rafting skills - all using only their bills and feet. Come along with master birder Connie Sidles as she introduces you to these wondrous architects of nature.
Class participants will have access to the Zoom recordings for 3 weeks after the last session of the class.

Instructor: David Droppers
One of the most popular groups of songbirds, sporting bright colors and inspiring cheerful attitudes. But our warbler game in the west is, well, poor. But that makes it a great place for the warbler beginner.
Learn about our local warblers species, how they live their lives, and gain a little confidence before heading to the warbler meccas of the east. Warbler sounds will also be covered, as many of them can be rather shy, hiding in the thicket or spending much of their time in the canopy.

Everett Public Library Presentation: Beyond Birdwatching - Observing Birds by Sound
Presented by Brian Zinke, Executive Director of PAS
The term “birdwatching” is a bit of a misnomer, as many birders use sound to aid them while looking for birds. In fact, many species birders report seeing are merely heard and not seen visually at all. Birding by ear (identifying birds by their songs and calls) is a very important skill for those who enjoy birding. In this presentation, we’ll cover the basics of birding by ear, including strategies and resources to help jumpstart or improve your ability to recognize a bird by its sounds.

Class: Shorebirds (Session #1)
3-week class conducted over Zoom
August 5, 12, 19
7:00-8:30pm
Instructor: David Droppers
Shorebirds are not popular with beginning birders because they're so similar, so variable, and such a challenge. Shorebirds are popular with experts for the exact same reasons! So don't be intimidated by this fascinating, and frankly cute, group of birds that grace our shores (and other habitats) for brief periods of the year. We'll focus on identification, but moreso, teach you tricks that we'll make tackling shorebirds much less intimidating. A field trip to the coast during shorebird migration will help solidify what we learn in class. Move from beginner to expert so you can get excited about shorebird season!
Class participants will have access to the Zoom recording for 3 weeks after the class.
Pilchuck Audubon members can receive 20% off registration. The discount code can be found in your most recent membership confirmation email/letter. Need help finding the code? Email Brian (director@pilchuckaudubon.org) to request the discount code.

The Juan Fernandez Islands are a remote oceanic archipelago located about 400 miles off the central coast of Chile. The islands are globally recognized for their unique biodiversity, having been designated a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve and a Chilean National Park. Included in the rich biodiversity of the islands is a seabird community comprised of 6 breeding species, 4 of which are endemic to Chile, including 2 endemic to a single island, Isla Alejandro Selkirk. All four of the species endemic to Chile are also listed globally as Vulnerable. Monthly Program: Birdie Big Year: Elevating Women Birders
Guest speaker: Tiffany Kersten
Tiffany didn't set out to do a Big Year, but after a series of unanticipated and serendipitous events, she suddenly found herself amidst one. As a sexual assault survivor, she spent 2021 traveling to all corners of the Lower 48 States, tallying birds and gifting personal safety alarms to women she met along the way. Her goal was to see 700 species, and to raise awareness of women's safety in the outdoors. She ended up surpassing her goal and setting a new record of 726 species. In her presentation, Tiffany will lead us through the fear, empowerment, struggles, and healing that all played vital roles in the personal growth she experienced on this wild adventure.
Tiffany Kersten is a Wisconsin native. She holds a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology from Northland College, and has spent over a decade as an environmental educator, teaching about bird migration with the Cape May Bird Observatory, monitoring shorebirds on Cape Cod, banding Honeycreepers in Hawaii, and finally landing in South Texas where she worked at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge and then managed the McAllen Nature Center. After completing her Lower 48 States Big Year in 2021, she founded her own company, Nature Ninja Birding Tours. She guides primarily in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, and offers international tours as well.
